Cornwall holiday park is best in west say award judges
Cornwall’s picturesque Roseland Peninsula is home to the West Country’s most outstanding holiday park, say judges in the recent Southwest Tourism Awards.
Trethem Mill Touring Park in St Just-in-Roseland was crowned with the top gold accolade in the “camping and caravan park of the year” category of this year’s competition.
The park was announced as the overall winner at a glittering awards ceremony at Ashton Gate Stadium in Bristol, attended by over 450 tourism and business chiefs.
Trethem Mill’s honour comes in the year when the Akeroyd family, owners of the business, will be marking in July their 25th anniversary of taking over the park.
In the 15 years that the regional awards have been run, Trethem Mill has achieved an impressed array of 15 gold awards at regional and national level.
Ian and Jane Akeroyd first moved to Trethem Mill with Ian’s parents – Derek and Lorna – in 1992, and determined to create a first-class environment for lovers of peace and tranquillity.
Their efforts over the years have been rewarded with a loyal following of customers, and awards for both the park’s quality standards and the care shown for the natural world.
Ian and Jane were praised recently by botanist David Bellamy when he presented them with his prestigious conservation award at its top gold level for the seventh year in succession.
It marks the raft of successful efforts made by the couple to safeguard the flora and fauna of the 12-acre grounds, and to create a haven for wildlife.
Sowings of high nectar-bearing flowers provide vital foraging for honey bees and other pollinators, and many native trees and shrubs have been planted over the years.
The park has also sited nesting boxes and harvests rainwater for the irrigation of plants, as well as using low-level illumination so that guests can enjoy the night sky.
Trethem Mill’s latest gold award in its silver anniversary year has provided a wonderful start to the 2017 holiday season, according to Jane:
“Our park is achieving just what we intended by attracting people with a real love for this beautiful part of Cornwall, and providing them will truly memorable stays,” said Jane.
“We’ve made many friends among our regular visitors over the years, and it’s wonderful to read all of the glowing online reviews which we regularly receive.
“So many mention not just the park, but also the hospitality and the friendly atmosphere, both of which are so important to a holiday experience.” she added.
