Lakes park sees rise in holidays with thrill-factor

Motorhomes and more adventurous accommodation are emerging as the joint favourites of people opting for a UK holiday this year, according to a Lake District tourism operator.

Henry Wild of Ambleside’s Skelwith Fold Caravan Park says the predicted rise in UK stays this summer is coming good – but presenting some families with a dilemma.

Those used to enjoying new experiences abroad, he suggests, see holiday cottages and hotels as lacking in the thrill factor they look for on a break.

But luxury glamping alongside wildlife in the woodlands, or hiring a motorhome for a holiday with ever-changing horizons, are perfect box-tickers says Henry.

“Overseas holidays have been losing their appeal in recent years for various reasons, and now the weak pound and rising air fares are making even more people think twice,” said Henry.

“For many younger couples and families, however, staying in a cottage or hotel doesn’t provide nearly enough contrast to the day-to-day life from which they want a break.

“Glamping pods, such as those we offer, really do offer an alternative living experience without the faff of putting up a tent, or sacrificing home-from-home comforts.

“Motorhomes also come with a chic and glamorous image, thanks to their association with music festivals, film sets, and the spirit of a laid-back lifestyle.

“And again, there’s no compromise on comfort as many now have full-size beds, luxury bathrooms, fully-fitted kitchens, central heating and generous living areas,” said Henry.

Skelwith Fold provides pitches throughout the 130-acre park for motorhomes as well as touring caravans, all with delightful views of the surrounding countryside.

For those preferring to glamp, Skelwith’s “Hideaway” pods are located in a quiet forest glade on the park with its abundant wildlife including deer and red squirrels.

Accommodating two people, each features a comfortable double bed, shower and loo, kitchen zone with microwave, oven and fridge, TV, and lounge-cum-dining space.

Measuring just 14ft x 10ft, the Hideaways also boast large picture windows, and folding fully-glazed doors leading onto a decking area with a pull-out sunshade.

“It’s been widely predicted that this will be a bumper year for people choosing a holiday in Britain, and our booking figures are certainly very robust,” said Henry.

“Finding a new and exciting ways of enjoying our wonderful countryside is, I think, key to making this trend long-term,” he added.
