A walker’s paradise while on holiday in Fife

Slow down and embrace a slower pace of life by seeing Fife on foot. The Fife Coastal Path is a long stretch with organised trips taking 5 or 6 days to complete – but that doesn’t stop you dipping in and out if you want to explore alone. Along the way you might see 12th century cathedrals, chocolate box fishing villages, quaint harbours and of course, plenty of wildlife.

Along the trail you might also go past St Andrews, the home of golf. With the oldest course in the world, it’s no surprise that this site is much revered by those that love the game. Certainly worth a visit if you can. Here you’ll also find Swilcan Bridge, known as Golfers’ Bridge, a small stone Roman arch built over 700 years ago that has earned profound respect from champion golfers from across the globe.

And if you want to try something new, the Forth Road Bridge, one of the three Forth Bridges, offers a pedestrian and cycleway across the Firth of Forth. This feat of engineering offers views across the water, as well as the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the original rail Forth Bridge.

Holiday destination brimming with history

Fife is a magnificent place to appreciate history and the air is tinged with mysticism. Explore the Georgian architecture and Victorian design of Mount Stuart’s. This beautiful building was rebuilt after fire damage, but you can certainly see nods to its original form built in 1719. Be sure to look up in the Marble Hall to see the map of the stars and stroll through the 300-acre gardens to take in the rock garden and arboretum.

Modern history buffs may also recognise some of the sites from popular TV show Outlander. Aberdour Castle has parts of the castle dating back to 1200, making it one of the two oldest standing castles in Scotland. Another location from the show is Culross, with its beautiful, cobbled streets, and all the history of a 17th-century port.

Another must-see is The National Wallace Monument. Instantly recognisable, this 220ft tower was built to honour Sir William Wallace, and it even houses his sword. Be sure to keep an eye out for the special statues and stunning stained glass too.

For historic hustle and bustle, Dunfermline in certainly the place to go. Named as one of the new cities in the 2022 Platinum Jubilee Civic Honours, it’s an enjoyable day out. Take a tour of the abbey and palace, walk through the greenhouses of Pittencrieff Park, or visit the new Abbot House Heritage Centre museum.
