The county of Norfolk is brimming with places to see and things to do. King’s Lynn is a well-preserved historic town with over 481 listed buildings. For something that combines contemporary activities and history, Norwich is the perfect destination. Walk the winding cobbled streets, take a guided tour, visit the Aviation Museum or visit Norwich Castle.
Thetford Priory is an English Heritage site, and the 14th Century gatehouses are still almost complete today. Immerse yourself in the town’s culture at the Charles Burrell Museum, Ancient House Museum and the Dad’s Army Museum. Nearby, you can walk under the canopy of Thetford Woods.
Take in the undulating landscape of the Norfolk Broads National Park. This idyllic place is home to more than a quarter of Britain’s rarest animals and plants. With fens, woodland, riverside trails and chocolate box villages, it’ll keep you occupied for days.
There’s an almost mystical air about The Brecks. Dating back to the Stone Age, this ancient heathland has wide open spaces perfect for peaceful relaxation and picnics.
The fens and open floodplains of Norfolk are a rich habitat for wildlife such as dragonflies, otters, water voles and marsh harriers. You’ll also have opportunities to cycle, hike, take part in water sports or go on a boating trip.
Norfolk has a rich history running throughout the county. As well as the Royal family’s country retreat, Sandringham, there are halls and manor houses waiting to be explored. Make use of your National Trust membership at Bickling Hall, Oxburgh Hall and Felbrigg Hall. Or, take in Houghton Hall, the home of Britain’s first Prime Minister. Here you’ll find an award-winning walled garden alongside outdoor sculptures, and opulent state rooms filled with art, gilded furniture and painted ceilings.
The obvious draw for many holidaymakers are the Norfolk Broads – clearly wildlife abounds in this landscape. There have been several very successful reintroductions of species such as the otter and even the heron that for a long time, struggled to survive. To the eastern side of the Norfolk Broads, the sandy beaches and stunning coastline caress the Broads at Horsey Mere with the salt water of the North Sea coming within a hare’s breathe of the fresh water of the Broads. Wander along the shoreline and you will see that Grey and common seals are thriving.
Behind the beach at Wells-on-Sea, you’ll find the gorgeously scented Corsican pine woods that were planted to protect the land from the weather and offer shade from the sun.
Boating and in particular, Boat Hire of course, has played its part in the development of the tourist industry since the early 20th century and today it is still a vibrant and successful part of Broadland life.
