Steeped in throwbacks to the past, Warwickshire is an unforgettable holiday destination. You don’t have to be a literary scholar to appreciate the links with some of the greats. Visit the house that Shakespeare was born and raised in and take a walking tour to his schoolroom, daughter’s house and his father’s workshop. Why not take in one of the bard’s great plays at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre too?
Warwick Castle is a fantastic day out and was used as inspiration for Edoras and Minas Tirith in Tolkien’s The Lord of Rings. You can immerse yourself in over 1000 years of history with live shows and events throughout the year, the Horrible Histories Maze, exhibitions and by scaling the towers and ramparts to get a sense of what it would have been like during battle.
Charles Dickens described Kenilworth as “beautiful beyond expression” and Sir Walter Scott appreciated the castle in its prime. Now you can relive the epic sieges and royal scandals of Kenilworth Castle in decorated private rooms, stunning gardens and mighty tower views.
Aside from its literary links, Stratford-upon-Avon is also home to the popular Butterfly Farm. Get up close and personal with minibeasts from across the globe in different habitats including exotic rainforests, ancient Mayan civilisations, meadows and waterfalls. As plenty of it is inside, it’s great whatever the weather.
For vehicle enthusiasts, the British Motor Museum houses over 400 cars in the collection, celebrating British motoring through the ages and in the future. As well as the permanent collections there are events throughout the year including school holiday activity camps, car brand mini shows and guided tours. For little ones there’s also an outdoor play area and family friendly café to refuel.
Warwickshire is great for getting out and about to take in that fresh countryside air. Why not take a stroll along the Grand Union Canal and the Hatton Locks, also known as ‘the stairway to heaven’ by boating enthusiasts. Stretching from London, the Grand Union Canal goes past Milton Keynes, and Northampton before reaching Warwick – although we’re not suggesting you walk all that way!
You can also experience the outdoors by taking a walk with some furry friends at Lucky Tails Alpaca Farm at Atherstone, packing up a picnic for an afternoon at Hartshill Hayes Country Park or hiring a bike to travel along The Stratford Greenway – a 10-mile trip along a former railway that’s easy and accessible for riders of all abilities.
Walking is also the best way to explore some of the excellent Warwickshire towns – Royal Leamington Spa is brimming with unique architecture, boutiques and the famous Minehead Springs. Rugby is another town with lots to do. Draycote Water is a lovely open space where you can walk, watch the anglers, and spot wildlife. Close by is Swift Valley Nature Reserve where you can take a picnic, walk the dog, walk under the woodland canopy and see if you can spot the kestrels, mallards and sparrowhawks in the skies above.
