The Elan Valley has a water system that’s perfect for adventure. Walk the trails taking in the dams, reservoirs and 73-mile aqueduct all nestled in this outstandingly beautiful area. Not only are they fun to look at, but they also protect the natural habitats of wildlife.
The River Severn is the longest river in Britain and winds its way through Powys. It cradles Welshpool, a Georgian town that used to be a transport hub – now its well-preserved historic attractions are worth a visit. Powis Castle and Garden has a distinct Italian Rennaissance style and looks like it’s perched on a green cushion due to the well-kept yew trees at its base. In Welshpool you’ll also find Montgomery Canal. Here you’ll see otters, water voles and interesting aquatic plants. Either walk alongside or take a guided boat trip.
Be sure to take in the heavenly views of Lake Vyrnwy too. Walk, cycle or horse ride its perimeter dotted with waterfalls and untouched open countryside. This RSPB reserve also has hides for bird watchers to see the local wildlife like buzzards, dippers and sparrow hawks.
Hay-on-Wye is an excellent day out. Literary lovers cannot miss a trip to the bookshops as the town is known as ‘The Town of Books’. The streets lay beneath the great Norman structure of Hay Castle, which has become a centre of arts and learning. Entry is free and you can take a guided tour to learn more about its history. What’s more, the whole family can go – there are free activities and crafts for children, and dogs are welcome in the gardens and on the ground floor.
