If you are looking for wild and rugged beaches then head out to Orfordness (famous for its UFO sighting) or Covehithe Beach which is just a few miles south of Lowestoft. Voted one of Britain’s best 40 beaches by The Telegraph, you will find lots of beautiful driftwood shapes to collect along the shore. Walberswick and Dunwich beach are two more beautiful beaches that are surrounded by heath and woodland as you explore the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

There is plenty of family fun to be had at Lowestoft’s Blue Flag beach. Lowestoft Beach is a wide sandy stretch, located between Claremont Pier and Pakefield. Just like Southwold Beach it is a favourite with families. Both beaches are backed by a promenade with beach huts, boasting a cafe which serves ice creams, hot and cold drinks and snacks.

Felixstowe Beach lies at the southern end of the coast and is full of exciting activities for all the family – including grandma and grandad. It is worth spending a day here to explore the 16th century fort, nature trails, or play a little crazy golf. And that is before hitting the beach!

Savouring Suffolk!

The Shotley Peninsula sits between the two Suffolk rivers, of the Orwell and the Stour, it is an unspoiled area of Suffolk with scenic views and landscapes. This area is a sailor’s paradise with both the river and Alton Water reservoir on which to sail. There are several sailing schools where beginners and experienced alike can take to the water and learn new skills.

If you fancy heading into town for a spot of shopping and culture, then Ipswich should be on your visitor list. Ipswich is the county-town of Suffolk and is one of the oldest English towns. It is home to over 1,500 years of heritage, a cutting-edge theatre and arts scene. Stop for a drink at one of the cool waterfront bars or cosy Suffolk pubs.

Take a day out to Jimmy’s Farm and Wildlife Park, and you will get to see up close an eclectic mix of animals from around the globe including rare and exotic breeds. Meet the cheeky meerkats, see camels and get to stroke the guinea pigs. You may even get to see Jimmy, one of TV’s best-known farmers.

Holidaying in historical Suffolk

Some of the best-preserved medieval buildings in Britain can be found in the heart of Suffolk. As you walk through the street of Lavenham, you will get a sense of how much wealth these towns had,. And it is all down to the wool trade. Also worth a visit is Suffolk’s only cathedral, St Edmundsbury, and the historic abbey and gardens beside it.

Experience the Victorian splendour of the Somerleyton Estate, or Helmingham Hall’s enchanting moat and gardens.

Visit the grand Tudor house of Christchurch Mansion and the Wolsey Art Gallery and discover the UK’s most significant collection of Constable and Gainsborough paintings and drawings outside of London.

Framlingham Castle, with its fearsome battlements, is an iconic symbol of history and heritage in Suffolk. Imposing Landguard Fort is also among the most popular historical places to visit, especially for families.

Horseracing plays a prominent role in the history and heritage of Suffolk. Newmarket is the home of horseracing. It was once the sporting playground for royalty and is now home to over 3,000 horses and boasts two racecourses. The racecourses host two of the five British Classic Races plus countless race days. The July Festival, one of the most glamourous events in the racing calendar.
