West Sussex offers so much variety for holiday visitors. It sprawls across both coastal paths and craggy cliffs to the rolling hills of the South Downs. If you’re an intrepid explorer you’ll want to take in the harbours, farmland and scenic beaches. If you want to learn more about the area’s rich history, there’s plenty of stately homes and quaint market towns.
From sandy havens to nostalgic seaside resorts, West Sussex has coastal experiences covered. Bognor Regis is only 20 minutes from the South Downs but feels a million miles apart. This bustling resort and lively seafront offers lots of things to do. You will find places to eat, a museum and the pier. On the pier you’ll find a carousel, dodgems and Ferris wheel. It’s the perfect family day out.
When the tide goes out at East Wittering beach, it leaves broad sand flats. These are ideal for shell hunting, sandcastles and kite flying. Just down the coast, Blue Flag beach West Wittering is the best place to partake in a spot of water sports including kitesurfing, windsurfing, stand up paddle boarding and wingfoiling.
Tucked away from the rest of Sussex on the Manhood Peninsula is the hidden gem, Selsey. Tuck into the local Selsey Crab. It is famous across the world as being one of the best. Then watch the boats pass by this village with a strong fishing heritage. If you’re visiting over summer keep your eyes to the sea as you may catch a glimpse of playful seals.
Chichester is a grand day out and full of history, including its famous Cathedral. Excavated in 1960 is Fishbourne Roman Palace – the site began life as a military base during the Roman invasion. The baths, city wall and amphitheatre are the perfect places to take in the Roman history across the town.
Another unmissable place to visit is Arundel Castle and Cathedral. Considered to be one of the greatest Victorian works, this gothic castle has kept most of its original features, including the Norman keep and medieval gatehouse. Other historical sites worth exploring are Borde Hill Garden and Petworth House.
Just outside of Chichester is the Goodwood Estate. Stretching across over 11,000 acres, the house itself is set in rural landscapes and wooded pathways. As well as the annual festival of speed, Goodwood is home to plenty of events across motorsport and horse racing, as well as golf, shooting and cricket. The house serves up an excellent afternoon tea, which will keep you refreshed and ready to explore the rooms that have been lovingly restored in authentic Regency décor.
If you prefer your sky-based speed, you’ll love exploring life in World War Two at the Wings Museum. Watch as the exhibitions come alive as you get up close and personal with the planes from the blitz and battle of Britain. Learn about uniforms, medals, flying equipment and air raid shelters too.
