Devon holiday park is a natural winner declares David Bellamy

Ladram Bay Holiday Park in Budleigh Salterton has winged its way to a top environmental accolade – with the help of bees, butterflies and birds.

The family-owned Devon park was named this October as a winner of the prestigious David Bellamy Conservation award at its top gold level.

It also received two extra commendations from the world-famous botanist for its efforts to protect honey bees, and its success in creating new wild flower habitats.

A long list of green initiatives at Ladram Bay led to its being selected for the honours which recognise the achievements of businesses championing sustainable tourism.

Professor Bellamy said that the park had become a haven for wildlife and native trees, shrubs and flowers thanks to its environmentally-friendly policies.

He praised Ladram Bay’s large areas of wild flower plantings which provide vital foraging for endangered honey bees, butterflies and other pollinators.

Also highlighted is the park’s management of its long-established hedgerows using traditional methods to protect the wildlife habitats and food resources they offer.

David Bellamy added that the inclusion of many locally sourced ingredients in Ladram Bay’s restaurant was reducing food miles and minimising pollution.

Park director Zoe House, who is a member of the park-owning Carter family, said that caring for the natural world had long been an important part of the park’s philosophy:

“Our family first started welcoming holidaymakers to Ladram Bay Holiday Park more than seventy years ago when it was a farm,” said Zoe.

“We have never lost sight of our agricultural roots and the importance of sustainability, which is why we try to ensure that the park is as welcoming to wildlife as it is to guests.

“I think it’s especially important to get our message across to children which is why we have activities such as wildlife trails and quizzes which encourage them to make new discoveries.

“It’s fantastic to receive these awards from David Bellamy, and a great deal of credit must go to our amazing ground team who work year-round on our various projects,” added Zoe.
