Eco-friendly Northumberland Holiday Park a Wildlife Wonderland
An Eco-friendly Northumberland Holiday Park is flying high after birds, bees and butterflies helped wing it to a top environmental accolade from David Bellamy.
The world-famous botanist this month presented Causey Hill Holiday Park in Hexham with his prestigious David Bellamy Conservation Award at its top gold level.
The family-owned Northumberland holiday park, enjoying picturesque views over the historic market town, has created a wildlife haven for guests to enjoy, said Professor Bellamy.
Covering just under 20 acres, Causey Hill has been owned for the past ten years by the Daly family, and provides pitches for touring caravans plus luxury caravan holiday homes to own.
Creating a VIP welcome for both wildlife and holiday guests
David Bellamy said that the park could congratulate itself on having created an environment which provided a VIP welcome for both wildlife and holiday guests.
He praised the park’s planting of hundreds of native trees and shrubs which, along with its private woodland, provide habitats and food resources for many animal and bird species.
Red squirrels are often spotted by holiday guests on nature trails laid out through the grounds, and the park’s wildlife pond is also a magnet for a raft of different water fowl.
In addition, the park has introduced many high nectar-bearing flowers which provide vital food resources for honey bees and a wide range of butterfly species.
Owl and bird nesting boxes have also been placed throughout the park to encourage resident and visiting feathered friends.
Enjoying the Night Sky
Professor Bellamy commended the use at Causey Hill of shielded lighting to minimise light pollution and help guests to enjoy Northumberland’s famous night skies.
He said that his award scheme also looked closely at community involvement, and that the Eco-friendly Northumberland Holiday Park had recorded great success in raising much-needed funds for local good causes.
In 2016 its nominated charity is to be Northumberland’s Blyth Wildlife Rescue, and a series of events throughout the year are already in preparation.
Conservation Efforts Rewarded
Park manager Linda Grant said that everyone was thrilled to have had the park’s conservation efforts given the thumbs-up from David Bellamy:
“We live and work in a beautiful part of Northumberland, and we are anxious to do all we can to protect the natural environment and wildlife,” she said.
“Causey Hill has a special appeal to couples and families who seek a traditional away-from-it-all holiday with gorgeous surroundings and no noisy distractions.
“They too are very supportive of our efforts to safeguard the surroundings here, and to help preserve this area’s very special character,” added Linda.
