Island park seeks buyer for holiday romances
One of Scotland’s most remote holiday parks has come up for sale after 30 years of private ownership, but the buyer will need to have a head for romance as well as business.
That’s because Shieling Holidays on Mull attracts customers lured by the island’s wild picture-postcard beauty – and they won’t want any of that changed.
But if the purchaser is prepared to let nature remain the prime attraction, they will find themselves running a rewarding and profitable enterprise with a bright future.
David Gracie and his wife Moira are now preparing to retire from the park they started over three decades ago, and which is valued at just over £900,000.
The buyer will acquire two letting cottages and 90 touring pitches as well as 16 semi-permanent shielings, named after the traditional dwellings of Scottish shepherds, which are let out to guests.
With the sea bordering the park on two sides and hourly ferries from the mainland, Mull is an enchanting wildlife paradise with sea eagles and otters regularly spotted.
The island is also very familiar to viewers of BBC TV’s Springwatch and Coast, and is home of the CBeebies programme Balamory, based around the colourful houses of Tobermory.
The environment is also good for business with letting and camping income seeing yet another substantial rise this year – helped by a recent reduction of almost 60% in ferry fares.
There is an opportunity to generate extra income by marketing an eco-friendly wind-powered shieling clothes dryer invented by David which enjoys UK and overseas sales.
In preparing for the sale, the business has recently invested almost £40,000 in a raft of projects designed to underwrite its future, including sea defences and other infrastructure.
“It’s a fantastic business opportunity for anyone, especially a couple, with determination, bucket loads of energy, and a hands-on attitude to life,” said David.
“In return, they will gain a much-loved holiday destination in the heart of one of Scotland’s most magical landscapes, and which has brought us enormous pleasure and satisfaction,” he added.
